Summer Capsule Wardrobe: 10 Pieces, 30 Outfits

amt. studio SS26 — garments hanging on a clothes rack, summer capsule wardrobe

You open a wardrobe full of clothes and still have nothing to wear. Sound familiar? It's not a quantity problem — it's a system problem. A capsule wardrobe is exactly that — a system: a few garments, chosen so they all work together, that solve the whole summer without a single morning dilemma.

It's not a new trend (stylists have used it for decades) and it's not an exercise in austerity. It's the most practical way to dress better while spending less — and the most sustainable one: the greenest garment is the one that gets worn many, many times.

The formula: 3 rules before choosing anything

  1. A closed palette. Pick 2 base colours (ecru, black, sand, chocolate…) and 1–2 accents. If everything shares a palette, everything matches. This is where most wardrobes fail: not for lack of clothes, but because the pieces don't talk to each other.
  2. The 70/30 ratio. 70% plain, timeless pieces and at most 30% with print or personality. Personality wears out fast; a good base never does.
  3. Fabrics that do the work for you. In summer: Tencel for everyday (cool, no ironing), linen for extreme heat, cotton and light knits for the evenings. Torn between fabrics? Full comparison here: Tencel or Linen?

The 10 pieces

We suggest our own because we know them intimately — but the formula works with any wardrobe.

  1. The perfect t-shirt — the absolute wildcard. Lula T-shirt
  2. A tank top — on its own in the heat, as a base layer when it cools. Lula Tank Top
  3. A statement top — the one that turns a basic look into an evening look. Crush Backless Top
  4. A fluid blouse — "dressed up" in 10 seconds flat. Orchid Blouse
  5. Fluid tailored trousers — office, dinner, airport. Orchid Pants
  6. A second, relaxed pair of trousers — the everyday one. Moana Pants
  7. A versatile skirt — with a tee by day, with the statement top by night. Lula Skirt
  8. A dress that works alone — for zero-decision days. Lula Halter Dress
  9. A light layer for the evenings — a cardigan that lives in your bag. Sand Cardigan
  10. The basic you actually wear most. Be honest: shorts? A second dress? An oversized shirt? The tenth spot is earned by use, not theory.

Ten pieces.
Thirty outfits.

The combinations (the 30 outfits build themselves)

The maths is simple: 4 tops × 3 bottoms is already 12 outfits; add the dress, the statement top, and the cardigan over almost everything, and you're past 30 without trying. A few concrete formulas:

  • Office Monday: fluid blouse + tailored trousers + flat sandals.
  • Saturday: t-shirt + skirt + white sneakers.
  • Dinner: statement top + the same trousers from Monday (nobody remembers, everybody notices).
  • Heatwave: the dress, alone, thank you very much.
  • Cool terrace evening: any of the above + the cardigan over the shoulders.
  • One week in a carry-on: all 10 pieces fit. That's the ultimate proof the capsule works.

The 4 classic mistakes

  1. Buying the whole capsule at once. It's not about buying 10 new garments: it's about choosing well from what you own and adding only what's missing.
  2. Choosing "special" pieces that don't combine. If it only works in one look, it doesn't belong in a capsule.
  3. Ignoring your real life. A remote worker's capsule looks nothing like a daily commuter's. Design for your actual week, not the ideal one.
  4. Forgetting maintenance. Ten garments working all summer long need care: cold washes, air drying, and the right guides — start with How to Care for Tencel.

Less, but better

A well-built capsule wardrobe has a curious side effect: you buy far less, but every purchase matters more. You start looking for the piece that survives 100 wears, not the one you fancy for 5 minutes. Which is exactly why at amt. we make small, timeless collections in ateliers near Barcelona: garments designed to stay in rotation for years, not hang around for a season.
